PRK is a method of surgically reshaping your cornea using the excimer laser. PRK is most often used to treat low to moderate amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Procedure

  1. The surgeon uses numbing drops and then a special scapula is used to loosen the outer epithelium of the cornea.
  2. An instrument is used to prevent blinking and the patient is told to look directly at the target during the procedure. In less than a minute or two, the laser removes the proper amount of tissue while it reshapes the surface of your cornea.

Advantages

  1. Less surgically involved.
  2. No suction used in surgery.

Disadvantages

  1. Extended use of post-op drops (3-4 months).
  2. Enhancements require repeat of complete procedure.
